Is Lilydale Baptist a charismatic Church?
It’s a bit of trick question in some ways, but none the less I think it is a question we need to answer. It’s not a question you answer with a maybe or sometimes, it a question that demands a yes or no. It is a question that comes up from time when I gather with other pastors. The conversation goes something like this. Where are you from? How big is your church? What type of worship? Followed by is it charismatic? How would you answer it?
Currently during the morning services we are engaging with different aspects of the Holy Spirit. We have considered fruit of the Spirit, Spirit of God, Spirit of power, Spirit of wisdom and Spirit of Christ. As we continue the series we will consider other aspects such as Spirit of mission and new life. This by no means will exhaust the possible topics we could discuss.
In 1 Corinthians 12 Paul is addressing the issue of spiritual gifts in a context where some gifts were being viewed as more important than others. This behaviour was fuelling division within the Corinthian congregation. Paul address the excesses and notes gifts are given to all for the purpose of each other (vr7). After identifying several gifts (vr8-10) he then makes it clear that it is one Spirt who gives and chooses the gift and to whom it will be given.
In Ephesians 4 Paul acknowledges various gifts given to the body of Christ the church for the expressed purpose of bringing maturity. Verse 16 says, “He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.” In the previous chapter as Paul wrote to the Ephesians he reminds them that Christ will make his home in their hearts (ours too), resulting in spiritual growth and deepening of faith, brought about by God’s power within us (Eph3:16-21).
God’s people are filled with His Spirit. His spirt brings power, unity, direction, maturity and understanding. If we are who we claim to be, God’s people gathered and worshiping at Lilydale Baptist. Then God’s Spirit dwells in us and among us, doing all that he does in us and through us.
