Stable One Winter Night Shelter

Our mission is to support the Church as it works together to share the love of God by providing accommodation to those in need. To journey with each person towards stability, offering spiritual and physical care.

Churches in the Yarra Valley will once more be working together this year to run the Winter Night Shelter. This is to meet the otherwise unmet need for crisis accommodation for people in our area who are experiencing homelessness during the coldest months of the year.

Seven churches will each take a night of the week to open their premises. Following positive assessment, guests will be invited in for a hot meal, fellowship, a warm bed to sleep for the night and breakfast the next morning. Where possible, churches are installing showers which we hope will be a further blessing. An eighth church will open during the afternoons, Monday-Friday, as a Daytime Support Centre. This will provide the opportunity for guests to secure their belongings, shower and access further support from volunteers. This may be just a listening ear over a cuppa, but could also include support to access other services, help with paperwork or making appointments etc. A minibus will leave each night from the Support Centre to take guests to the venue for the Night Shelter.

The Shelter will be staffed by volunteers from many different churches (last year 36 were represented) and from within the community. Check out our Roles page to read about how you might get involved.

The project is managed by a Coordinator in conjunction with a Steering Committee (made up of Venue Coordinators, Volunteer Coordinator, Deputy Project Coordinator and an ex guest from last year as Advisor).

Costs for this project are low (food, heating, equipment) because of the volunteer hours which are donated. This year we will be paying a Deputy Coordinator for two days per week throughout the three month project. They will support the Project Coordinator (currently a volunteer position). If the project continues in 2019, we will be seeking to raise funds to appoint to this role. If you would like to donate towards the cost of running this project, please go to our Donate page for details.

Lilydale Baptist Church is one of the churches involved in Stable one and will be housing homeless people in the church for a night a week throughout the months of June, July and August.
